Rec Program Overview

Our player development Recreation program is run entirely by volunteers. Every Fall and Spring season we have almost 300 players, 20 teams and over 40 volunteer coaches. We offer a 10-game season with trained referees on a dedicated grass field at Bolen Park in Leesburg (Field 17). The primary goal of the Recreation program is to develop the players’ love of the game and teach basic skills. We also offer additional skill development clinics throughout the year for those that want to cross over to the Travel program. If interested in becoming one of our volunteer coaches, please fill out the information link below and our commissioner will contact you. Prior knowledge of the game is not required. We also offer a USA Field Hockey introductory training program to get you going.

INCREASING SKILL: FOCUS ON PLAYER AND TEAM DEVELOPMENT

The Youth Rec League program is for 3rd through 8th grade* players regardless of experience. Players will be teamed by school and/or high school cluster to promote school spirit and club play. Clusters may be grouped together to make teams. Our program is focused on providing players of all skill levels the opportunity to develop and grow.

TEAMS

Teams are first determined by the grade of the player for the academic school year. 1st & 2nd, 3rd & 4th, 5th & 6th, and 7th & 8th grade players are teamed together. Teams are then created in priority of:

  1. Current school
  2. High school cluster

Special requests for specific team placement based on friends, a particular coach, practice time, or carpool arrangements will not be accepted.

Teams vary in size from 7 to 10 players for 5v5 play, 9 to 13 players for 7v7 play, and 15 – 21 for 11v11 play. All 7 v 7 and 11 v 11 teams must play with a goalie. If players need to rotate this position, goalie gear must be cleaned and sanitized prior to the next player using the equipment. Players registered after teaming has been done will be placed where space exists. Clusters may also be combined to make appropriately sized teams.

SEASONS

The Youth Rec League program runs in both spring and fall. The Spring season typically runs from the end of March through early June. The Fall season typically runs from late August through late October.

EQUIPMENT

All players must have a molded colored mouth guard, field hockey shin guards (not soccer) and a stick. Turf shoes, cleats, or sneakers may be worn.

UNIFORM

All players will be given a Hammers pinnie that must be worn at all practice sessions and games.

Registration

Registration is open through August 1st. Late Registration starts July 24th and runs through August 1st.  Please get your player registered soon to insure they do not end up on the waitlist.  https://go.teamsnap.com/forms/440303
